Paste Magazine Pick for Best New Fantasy Books of July 2022
From the time she was born, Sigrid has only ever been ordinary. Being paired at birth with a plain horse—instead of the powerful winged mare of a valkyrie—meant there would be no warrior path for her. No riding the skies, no glory among the nine worlds. Just the simple, unremarkable life of a stable hand.
Everything changes when a terrible enemy ambushes Vanaheim and Sigrid sees a vision of herself atop a mythical stallion, leading the valkyries into a harrowing battle. Finally, she can grab her future with her own two hands and become the hero of her own story...if she dares.
But her destiny is tied up with Mariam, a fallen valkyrie who's allied herself with the very enemy Sigrid is trying to stop.
Now Sigrid has left ordinary behind as she begins a journey with the beautiful—if treacherous—valkyrie, each step bringing her closer to answers...and to awakened feelings for Mariam.
But the life Sigrid left behind is starting to look a lot like paradise...especially when her destiny lies in the one place no mortal should tread: the gates of Hel.
The Sigrid and The Valkyries series is best enjoyed in order.

Grades 8-10 Sigrid works for the Valkyries of Vanaheim--as a stablehand, much to her chagrin. She's watched the strong women on their flying horses all her life, and she's always dreamt of being one. But no matter how hard she tries, General Eira won't believe Sigrid can be more. After a particularly brutal attack on the Vanahalla palace, a vision leads Sigrid to leave on a journey with a host of enemies at her side, questing to reach the legendary Helheim before the junior Valkyries. She'll have to trust her beloved (nonflying) horse, Hestur, and watch her back as she embarks on a tentative alliance with ex-Valkyrie Mariam and Night Elf Fisk to become the heroine she needs to be. If she can save a stolen relic from the Queen of Helheim--and ignore the feelings she's starting to have for Mariam--maybe then she'll get the respect and title she wants so badly. Warner is a veteran writer, but her mixing of the ancient Valkyrie culture and modern vernacular lends an odd tone to this otherwise action-packed Scandinavian Cinderella story.

Gr 7 Up-Sixteen-year-old Sigrid wants to be a Valkyrie more than anything. An orphan bonded to a wingless horse, she works as a stable hand, anxious to prove herself. So, when the prophetic Eye shows her riding the mythical eight-legged Sleipnir into battle, Sigrid jailbreaks Mariam, an enemy Valkyrie, to help her make the perilous journey to Helheim. But what awaits her there is not what she expected, and Sigrid is confronted with the price she must pay to fulfill the destiny she always dreamed of. The book centers Sigrid's character development and her budding relationship with Mariam, with a supporting cast who are depicted with varied skin tones, sexualities, gender identities, and backgrounds. Anachronistic dialogue and straightforward language allow for the vivid worldbuilding moments and fast-paced action sequences to really pop, while the vagueness of the prophecy heightens the suspense in the final third as Sigrid becomes increasingly desperate to manifest it. The novel works well as a standalone, but the promise of a new mission, returning characters, and more worlds to explore will spur fans on to the sequel. VERDICT A colorful coming-of-age action-adventure exploring themes of trust, sexuality, family, and fate against a Norse mythology-inspired backdrop, this book will round out the worlds on a high fantasy shelf and serves as a good introduction for new readers of the genre.-Madeline Newquist
